Know Your Rights Workshop – Oberlin College
January 19, 2017 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm
Hope for the best…but prepare for the worst. Most commentators agree that we are entering a highly unusual, and largely unpredictable, moment in U.S. history. Regardless of our view of what is coming, it’s important to be prepared for all eventualities. “Know Your Rights” is a workshop designed to provide information and a space for discussion on a variety of challenges that we might be facing.
Among other topics to be addressed in this workshop:
* Oberlin and the academic community: What are our rights as members of a private, academic institution? What liabilities do we have? What to do if challenged or threatened? Are there elements of Ohio law that impact our rights?
* In the spirit of a sanctuary campus: What protections are we providing for undocumented students? What are the limits of the protection that we can provide? What issues should we be aware of?
* Free speech and academic freedom.
* Scams and “sting” operations: How do we protect ourselves from the deceptive and illegal actions of organizations such as “Project Veritas” or similar “sting” operators who have been on campus before and are likely to return?
* Citizenship/individual rights: What are your rights as citizens? What rights do you have as non-citizens (with or without documentation)?
The workshop is sponsored by CTIE (Center for Teaching Innovation and Excellence) and will feature presentations by faculty and staff, as well as ample time for discussion.
